Ben Kelly is the genius behind the Haçienda’s unique design and graphic language. Enlisted by Manchester’s most famed graphic designer Peter Saville, the architect looked at the city’s industrial past to herald its bright, new future. Instead of traditional nightclub tropes, like gaudy neon signs above the entrance, Kelly took a minimalistic approach, antithetical to what lay inside the former yacht showroom.
A simple 12-inch granite block, emblazoned with the club’s name and Factory catalogue number, carved by somebody who made gravestones. The plaque, cemented between bricks, to ensure the design wasn’t interrupted by drill holes, for a clean, uninterrupted look.
